Practice & Process

Quiet observation of the Maine coast, rendered in oil.

Under the name Katie Fischer Cohen, I have returned to the easel full-time. My practice is now dedicated to the slow, deliberate study of light and atmosphere in Portland.

Each painting is a response to the local landscape, focusing on the tactile quality of oil paint and the subtle shifts in coastal color. I work to capture the quiet stillness of Maine.

The discipline of slow, tactile painting

My process is rooted in the quiet, methodical traditions of oil painting, where every layer is a deliberate response to the light and atmosphere of the Maine coast.

01
Phase 1
Tactile Foundation
Linen & Surface Preparation
Every canvas begins with hand-stretched Belgian linen, primed with multiple layers of rabbit-skin glue and lead-based gesso to ensure a luminous, archival ground for oil application.

Studio Details:

  • Custom linen tensioning
  • Archival gesso application
  • Surface texture calibration
02
Phase 2
Luminous Depth
Pigment & Glazing Technique
I build form through a slow, deliberate process of fat-over-lean layering, using cold-pressed linseed oil and hand-ground pigments to achieve the subtle, atmospheric depth of Maine light.

Studio Details:

  • Hand-ground pigment mixing
  • Fat-over-lean layering
  • Atmospheric glaze application
03
Phase 3
Enduring Protection
Final Varnish & Curing
Once the oil has fully oxidized, each piece receives a final damar varnish to unify the surface sheen and protect the impasto ridges from environmental degradation for generations.

Studio Details:

  • Oxidation monitoring
  • Damar varnish application
  • Final surface unification
